What To Do In Stanley and Surrounds: Tasmania's Beautiful North West
The picture-perfect town of Stanley situated on Tasmania’s handsome North West Coast might just be one of the most scenic destinations to visit on your Tasmanian camper adventure. The town is located approximately 127 kilometres outside of Devonport and offers a delightful self-drive experience past rugged coastline and rolling lush green paddocks spotted with cows. These activities will ensure you experience the highlights of Stanley and its surrounding area.
Walk the Nut
What’s that you ask? The Stanley ‘Nut’ (featured above) is a 143 metre high massif rising up from Bass Strait that stands proudly over Stanley. A walk up this massif offers spectacular views of Bass Strait and the curved bay below. Once you reach the top, complete the pleasant 2 kilometre circuit track that will take you to spectacular viewing points. If you’re not able to complete the steep walk, there is a chair-lift available at the Nut offering panoramic views.
Admire Historic Architecture on the Stanley Heritage Walk
Take a walk around this town to appreciate the charming historic buildings that date back to the 1800s. As you visit points of interest around the town, simply scan the coeds using QR code technology on your smart phone and you will be told about the sites history.
Sample Local Culinary Delights
Stanley offers a true paddock to plate experience like no other with much of the locally sold produce sourced from the paddocks and producers living on the North West Coast. Visit Providore 24 in Stanley to find the best of the best and then prepare a feast in your motorhome. Don’t miss out on the locally caught octopus! If you’re looking to head out for dinner, you can’t go past Xanders, providing the finest beef produce in the area from local Stanley farms – the dessert menu is a must on its own!
Drive the Tarkine
Just a short drive away from Stanley, you will discover the Tarkine Conservation area , the greatest expanse of cool temperate forest in the country. This area, colloquially known as the Edge of the World, has a myriad of outdoor activities on offer include bush walks, adventure activities and scenic driving routes. Don’t hesitate to experience the wild heart of the area at the Edge of the World lookout.
Fish at Stanley Wharf
Stanley wharf is one of the most popular fishing spots on the North West Coast offering an abundance of Australian salmon, mullet, squid, snotty trevally and snapper. Join the locals at the wharf for a day of fishing! You don’t need a licence for marine fishing in Tasmania with a rod and line. The wharf is just a short walk from the Stanley Caravan Park where you can later cook up your catch. Stanley Seal Cruises This 75 minute eco-cruise is a great way to get up close and personal with Australian Fur Seals and you are guaranteed a sighting! The cruise leaves from Wharf Road and navigates to Bull Rock where you will see these unique creatures. The tour is seasonal and does not operate over the winter months.
