5 Unusual Encounters For Your Tassie Adventure!
The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)
Home to arguably the most controversial collection of art work in the world, MONA is truly an unusual encounter that shouldn’t be missed off anyone’s Hobart itinerary. This museum is best accessed by the iconic Mona ferry that leaves from Hobart’s Brooke Street Ferry Terminal. To start this weird yet wonderful experience, purchase a ticket in the ferry’s ‘posh pit’ where you can experience glamour on the Derwent River. The Post Pit has a bar offering complimentary beverages as well as canapés, pastries and antipasto platters. Those sticking with a standard ticket can sit on sheep out on the front deck. As you round the bay approaching the museum, you will be impressed by its iconic architecture. Spend an entire day exploring MONA and marvel at the eclectic artworks. It is said that owner of the museum and world renowned gambler, David Walsh, lives somewhere in the underground labyrinth and may be watching you as you admire or gasp at the range of shocking art.
The Bonorong Night Tour
This exclusive private tour at Tasmania’s popular Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary will get you up close and personal with the state’s most unique wildlife. Throughout the night you will have the chance to hand-feed Tassie’s most weird and wonderful creatures including tawny frogmouths, bettongs and golden possums. First you will feed dinner to the daylight dwellers before greeting the nocturnal animals with breakfast. Enjoy tug of war with a Tasmanian Devil, encounter a mob of super-friendly Forester kangaroos and meet orphaned and injured creatures. This wilderness experience is for any animal-lover and gives you the chance you have been waiting for to experience Tassie’s wildest and weirdest.
Tasmazia & The Village of Lower Crackpot
What’s that you ask? This award-winning attraction is home to the largest maze complex in the world. The 8 mazes are catered for adults and children and give you the chance to get gloriously lost! The Village of Lower Crackpot is also onsite and is a whimsical artwork originally crafted by Brian Inder. It is an entire model village built to 1/5th scale. Each building in the village has a unique story to tell and is connected to real people! This fun-filled and family friendly attraction is located in the North West of the state and also has a Pancake Parlour and scenic gallery onsite.
Dismal Swamp Slide
Dismal Swamp Slide is truly a unique adventure encounter in the beautiful Tarkine Forest. Enjoy a fast-paced adventure down a 110 metre slide for an exhilarating entry to the floor of the swamp. This attraction is located on the Bass Highway in the heart of the Tarkine wilderness.
Honesty Box Systems
Tasmanians are a trusting bunch of people; so trusting, in fact, that they leave their fresh produce for sale in sheds on the side of the road without supervision. The honesty box system relies on each visitor paying at this shed or box using the honour system. If you’re in search of fresh locally grown produce including delights and treats, take a drive around the Huon Valley in summer time and you will be overwhelmed by what is on offer! Honesty boxes can be found all around the state, so go in search of one today!
