7 Days Tasmanian East Coast Hidden Gems Itinerary
Ah, Tasmania’s picturesque East Coast, known for its idyllic white-sand beaches, charming coastal townships and friendly locals. A visit to the Apple Isle simply would not be complete without experiencing this natural wonderland and all that it has to offer. Enjoy a relaxing self-drive adventure and breathe in some of the freshest air in the world as you navigate the winding coastal road. This 7 day route will guarantee that you experience all those hidden gems while you’re on the road.
Start your self-drive adventure in the scenic capital of Hobart to experience Tasmania’s pulsing heartbeat. This city is ideal for exploring by foot and has a myriad of activities, restaurants and galleries on offer in the city and wharf district. Catch a ferry from Brooke Street Pier to the famous Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), but not before sampling some of Tasmania’s best boutique produce on offer at Brooke Street’s upper level. Admire the impressive architecture of Mona as you approach from the Derwent River and spend a full day exploring the quirky art exhibitions and displays underground. Finish your day in the lively suburb of North Hobart, home to a range of multicultural restaurants and laidback wine bars.
Day 2: Hobart to Orford
From Hobart head towards the fishing town of Orford. This coastal hub located at the mouth of the Prosser River was first established as a mainland port for the convict settlement on nearby Maria Island and is now popular with locals for its prime summer-holiday location and impressive beaches. Here you can enjoy scenic cliff walks from East Shelley to stunning Spring Beach or walk the convict trail besides the river to the ruins of Paradise probation station. Wine enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to Darlington Vineyard perched on a charming hillside overlooking Maria Island.
Day 3: Orford to Swansea
Enjoy the short but scenic drive to the quaint town of Swansea just 2 hours north of Orford. This beautiful coastal town is home to a range of galleries, shops and eateries perfect for enjoying a relaxed day on the East Coast. On the way into Orford be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the iconic Spikey Bridge and Kate’s Berry Farm overlooking Oyster Bay where you can sample some of the finest berries and sweet-delights on the East Coast.
Day 4: Swansea to Coles Bay
Coles Bay is the beautiful gateway to explore world-class Freycinet National Park with beautiful Wineglass Bay. Set up your camper for the night at the spectacular free camping site within the park and dine at Coles Bay where you will find world-class seafood restaurants. Enjoy a leisurely walk around Coles Bay and take in the looming view of the Hazards cutting an impressive silhouette.
Start the day early and brace yourself to experience one of the best views in the state. Wineglass Bay Lookout is just a short hike away and here you will be greeted by a clear blue bay and pristine-white beach. Though not so much a secret anymore, if you feel like a hike the views from the top of nearby Mount Amos are unparalleled.
St Helens is just a short drive from the world-renowned Bay of Fires, voted one of the best beaches in the world. Base yourself in St Helens and take a day trip to Bay of Fires to experience magnificent white sand beaches and unique orange lichen-covered rocks that are known for making an appearance in many of Tasmania’s most famous paintings.
Make your way back to Hobart via Campbell town and explore the historic town of Ross on your way. Appreciate the neat tree-lined streets, the unique Ross Female Factory and Australia’s second oldest bridge.
