Tasmania's Top National Parks To Visit With a Motorhome
More than 40% of Tasmania is protected in either state reserves or national parks, giving you the opportunity to experience the ultimate wilderness encounter under down under. The majority of national parks have allocated parking for motorhomes and campervans, some with access to amenities including toilet and shower facilities. Here are a list of Tasmania’s best national parks to visit with your camper or medium sized motorhome:
Freycinet National Park, East Coast of Tasmania
Home to spectacular Wineglass Bay, Freycinet National Park is one of Tasmania’s most visited national parks and is just an easy 2 and a half hour drive from the capital of Hobart. Small to medium-sized motorhomes can stay at all campgrounds in the park with the exception of ‘Stumpys number 2’ which only accommodates tents. Honeymoon Bay is an idyllic place to base yourselves overnight and is equipped with electric barbeques, picnic tables and toilet facilities. Other powered sites can be found at Richardsons Beach and Ranger Creek. For small motorhomes and campervans, there are 19 powered sites available here. In peak season (namely the summer months), you must put in an application to stay at these sites.
Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair National Park
A visit to the Apple Isle simply would not be complete without a trip to the craggy peaks of Cradle Mountain. The best place to base yourselves is privately owned, Discovery Holiday Parks – Cradle Mountain. This park is located in close proximity to the information centre where you can catch a shuttle bus to Dove Lake and the myriad of walking tracks available. Please be advised that motorhomes are not permitted past the visitor centre.
Mt Field National Park
Located just over an hour outside of Hobart through the Derwent Valley, Mt Field National park is a must visit for anyone adventuring around Tasmania. Mt Field Campground, located in close proximity to the Visitor Information Centre, is the best base for campervans and motorhomes and offers powered and unpowered camp sites. All camp sites have access to an amenities block with hot showers, BBQ areas and a coin-operated washing machine. An unpowered site costs $10 for 1 person and $16 for 2. For a powered site, you will pay $20 for up to 2 people and then $9 for each additional adult.
Narawntapu National Park
Narawntapu National Park has several camping areas within the park including Koybaa, Bakers Point, The Horse Yards and Springlawn. Springlawn is one of the better equipped camp areas offering a shower block with tokens, powered sites and electric BBQs. Don’t forget that if you are travelling by motorhome, you are required to stop at a powered site at least every second night, overnight, to give the vehicle a full charge.
