Where To Find Snow In Tasmania
Are you dreaming of a white winter where you can build a snowman for a change? With Winter just around the corner, snow is already starting to settle in selected areas of Tasmania. One of the most frequently asked questions we have here at Cruisin’ is “where can we find snow?” To help guide you in the right direction this year, here are the top places to find that allusive white powder on your winter getaway in Australia’s beautiful island state.
Mount Wellington
The pinnacle of Mount Wellington has already seen its first dust coating of the season and it’s impressive. Whether you are seeing it up close or from a distance, this sure is a spectacular sight that is a welcome addition to any Tasmanian winter visit. Rug up and take a drive to the pinnacle for spectacular views of the city below and to make a snow angel or build a snowman.
If you’re lucky, you might even find snow as low as The Springs, just a short drive from Hobart’s city centre. Locals and tourists alike can be found fossicking in the snow during the winter months and it is a truly iconic Tasmanian winter experience.
Cradle Mountain
Perhaps one of Australia’s most stunning natural sights and Tasmania’s most visited tourist attractions, Cradle Mountain sees its fair share of snow throughout the winter months, particular on its higher peaks. Don’t forget your camera because this is one photo opportunity that you don’t want to miss.
For the best views of the mountain, visit Dove Lake and walk the circuit track or if you want the ultimate birds eye view, there are a number of scenic flights that operate in the area. Snow only settles on the ground only a few times of year and we recommend staying a few days to guarantee that snow experience!
Ben Lomond
If it’s skiing you’re after, beautiful Ben Lomond is the place to be. Ben Lomond National Park is the only vehicular accessible alpine snow area in Tasmania. The ski slopes are best accessed by Troop Carriers that run on demand from the PWS registration area at the top car park and cost just $15 for the 15 minute drive to the top (unfortunately the slopes cannot be accessed by motorhomes or campervans). Don’t worry if you don’t have your ski gear with you as you can easily hire the gear at the top for affordable rates. On the slopes you will also find a cosy public shelter with a welcoming open fire area and toilets cleaned daily.
If you’re looking for something to warm you up, the friendly onsite cafe offers a range of treats ideal for escaping the cold including hot snacks and drinks. First-time skiers are also catered for as the park offers both group and private ski lessons. The ski area uses snow guns to top up the natural snow, making the conditions perfect for skiing and tobogganing. Ski season depends on snow fall but usually runs from early July to mid-September.
