Your Guide To Discovering The Huon Valley
Picture rolling green countryside, idyllic houses and apple trees stretching off over the horizon and you will bring to mind Tasmania’s beautiful Huon Valley. It is in this valley that you will discover true hidden gems of Tasmania including fine local produce, reflective channels, ancient trees and charming towns. For the highlights of the area, don’t miss out on the following:
Enjoy Tasmanian cider at The Apple Shed
Australia’s 1st organic cidery was born in the Huon Valley when William Smith planted his first orchard in 1888. Since William planted this orchard, four generations of Smith family members have produced the very best of Tasmanian apple cider. A visit to the Huon Valley simply would not be complete without a stop at the rustic apple shed, built in 1942, home to Willie Smith’s cellar door and a cafe serving fresh produce sourced from the local area. Visit over the weekend to enjoy live musicians and join the locals over a pint or two of Willie Smith’s Bone Dry.
Walk among the tree tops at Tahune Forest Airwalk
This scenic walk along the treetops is a must for all exploring the Huon Valley and is an easy outing for all fitness levels and ages. The attraction is open from 9 am to 5 pm between October and March and costs just $28 for an adult and $14 for a child. At the end of the walk admire the view out over the Huon River from the viewing platform. After, face your fears and take a a ride on the Cable Eagle Hand Glider where you will be lifted up 50 metres amid Tasmania’s famous huon pine trees.
Delight your inner chocoholic at The Cat’s Tongue
Owned by a Canadian called Andy, the Cat’s Tongue is located in the town of Huonville and specialises in mouth-watering handmade chocolates and pralines. The cafe has an affordable breakfast and lunch menu including delicious baked potato dumplings, Spanish tortilla and Belgian waffles. This one is a must for foodies!
Take a boat trip to Bruny Island
Bruny Island may just be Tasmania’s best kept secret. Situated off the shores of Kettering across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, the island is easily accessible and home to some of the state’s best nature and food encounters. Pick your own berries, visit the Bruny Island neck for stunning panoramic views or take a Pennicott Wilderness Journey around the island to truly appreciate its magnificent dolerite columns, hidden sea caves and diverse sea life.
Hartz Mountains National Park
Located at the Southern end of the Huon Valley, Hartz Mountains National Park is part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Listed Wilderness Area. The area is home to a myriad of walking tracks that will guide you through subapline woodlands to ice-carved crags and still lakes. The national park has basic day facilities including a picnic area and toilet.
Ida Bay Railway & Cafe
Ida Bay Railway is the last operating bush tramway in Tasmania and offers a two hour tour through the historic 7.3 kilometre track. Learn about the history of the track and explore a pristine beach.
